Drawing Newburyport History: Ethel Reed and the Gilded Age

  • Newburyport Art Association 65 Water Street Newburyport, MA, 01950 United States (map)

Come celebrate the most famous Newburyport artist you’ve never heard of! Her impoverished Kent St upbringing gave no hint that Ethel Reed would one day become the pre-eminent female poster artist of the Gilded Age. At the age of 21, the beautiful and gifted Reed made her debut and achieved international acclaim, running around London in the same circles as Oscar Wilde and Aubrey Beardsley, and then all but disappeared.

Join us Saturday the 8th, when the cast of Theater in the Open’s Lady Windermere’s Fan will be posing for Newburyport Artist Association artists, while Sierra Gitlin of the Museum of Old Newbury presents a brief history of the work and life of this enigmatic Newburyport native.

Whether you want to draw, learn about Ethel, or just say hi, drop by the beautiful Newburyport Artists Association anytime from 3-5pm on Saturday, July 8th.
